Garlic Town, USA 2021 Takes Place in Bennington, Vermont Labor Day Weekend

Posted: September 4, 2021

Bennington, Vermont will transform into “Garlic Town, USA” on Saturday to celebrate of all things garlic.

Bennington’s annual Garlic and Herb Festival is held every year on Labor Day weekend. Two years ago, the festival saw crowds of over 16,000 patrons and 200 garlic-themed vendors.

Due to the COVID pandemic and Vermont restrictions on festivals in 2020, the 25th annual “Garlicfest,” was canceled and the organizers, the Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce, pivoted to a different model in a rebranded, “Garlic Town, USA” event in downtown Bennington.

19 Tarantulas, 1 Python Left in Maine Apartment

Posted: September 4, 2021

A Maine landlord arranged for the rescue of 15 tarantulas and one python that had been left behind by a tenant.

Animal rescuer Drew Desjardins was called to the apartment Wednesday in Auburn, the Sun Journal reported.

He found that four of 19 tarantulas had died and that the ball python did not have water. Desjardins said Thursday that he took the surviving animals back to his home and that they were doing fine.

Collectible Prices Skyrocket

Posted: September 4, 2021

Americans have become obsessed with collectibles, bidding up prices for trading cards, video games and other mementos of their youth. The frenzy has brought small fortunes to some, but a deep frustration for those who still love to play games or trade cards as a hobby.

Among the items most sought after — and even fought over — are the relics of millennials’ childhoods. These include copies of trading cards such as Pokemon’s Charizard and Magic: The Gathering’s Black Lotus as well as Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. game cartridges. Some cards are selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars and an unopened Super Mario game recently sold for an astonishing $2 million.

This is more than a case of opportunistic collectors looking to cash in on a burst of nostalgia triggered by the pandemic. Everyone seemingly is angling for a piece of the pie.

Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin will miss the opener against Louisville with a breakthrough case of COVID-19.

Kiffin announced the positive test on Saturday, two days ahead of the Rebels’ opener in Atlanta.

Kiffin, his staff and his players are all fully vaccinated. He said no other members of the team are expected to miss the game because of COVID-19.

“I am grateful to be vaccinated and experiencing only mild symptoms,” Kiffin said in a statement released on Twitter. “So much so, I debated over being tested, but I’m relieved that I did.”

Fully vaccinated NFL players will get COVID-19 tests weekly

Posted: September 4, 2021

Fully vaccinated players will be required to get tested for COVID-19 weekly instead of every 14 days as part of the revised protocols for the regular season agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA.

The weekly testing applies also for fully vaccinated Tier 1 and 2 staff. There’s an option for a second test for those who want it, according to a memo sent to clubs and obtained by The Associated Press on Monday.

Fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wait for results prior to entering a team’s facility. Each club must conduct its testing over a three-day period.

Unvaccinated players will continue to be tested daily.

Supposedly, Animals Didn’t Escape New Jersey Zoo Storm

Posted: September 3, 2021

CLAIM: Images show that a variety of wild animals are loose in South Orange, New Jersey after they escaped overnight from the Turtle Back Zoo when the remnants of Hurricane Ida caused flooding at the facility.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. These images are old. Turtle Back Zoo tweeted on Thursday that its animals “weathered the storm well and remain safe and secure within the facility.”

THE FACTS: Lions, crocodiles, penguins and gorillas are not roaming the streets of South Orange, New Jersey, despite a hoax that was circulating widely the morning after severe flash flooding in the area.
